Ostrich-shaped lamp characterized by a metal structure assembled by expert craftsmen on which is woven, not straw as is usually the case, but recycled plastic. The collaboration between Mercedes Salazar and Serena Cancellier is born of the instant complicity in their meeting and conversation at a dinner in Bogota in 2019. Serena, who had been invited by the Colombian Chamber of Fashion to lead a workshop, was discovering for the first time the country that was, by coincidence, her godmother’s homeland and had always fascinated her. “We immediately had the impression of having already met in another life,” says Mercedes. The collection honors the skills, vernacular but with a twist, of Colombian craftsmen. Each of the unique, numbered, pieces comprises a metal structure on which is woven not straw, as is traditional, but recycled plastic. “We wanted to show the craftsmen that they can make things that are special, bigger, different, so that they too can give rein to their imagination with the pieces,” says Mercedes. “Our aim is to highlight Colombia and to develop sustainable projects in which craftsmen can earn a decent living,” adds Serena.
