HISTORIC FRESCO PAINTINGS FROM POMPEII DEPICT DIONYSUS TO BE A MUCH LOVED DEITY AMONG THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED THERE. VESUVIUS WAS THE MOUNTAIN ON WHICH HE PARTIED AND DRANK THE WINES PRODUCED IN POMPEII. IT IS THOUGHT THAT HE WAS SO HIGHLY RESPECTED DUE TO THE FERTILITY OF THE LAND SURROUNDING VERSUVIUS. THE SMOKE THAT COMES FROM THE TOP OF THE INCENSE BURNER IMITATES THE HEAT THAT LIES UNDERNEATH THE SURFACE, ADDITIONALLY THE BLACK OUTER COLOUR REPRESENTS THE DESTRUCTION AND DARKNESS THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY DESTROY THE FERTILE AND COLOURFUL LAND OF POMPEI.
Note: The incense holder pedestal fits under one of the legs so that the smoke passes through the cracks in the upper decoration.
COMPOSITION: EARTHENWARE CLAY
